First we had to make it…it had been quite a long time since I had  made play-doh but it turned out great.  There are plenty of recipes for it out there but here is how we did it:

1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon oil, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, peppermint extract, and a few drops of red food coloring

Combine all ingredients (minus food coloring) in a pan and stir.  Cook over low heat, stirring until ball forms.  Add food coloring and mix thoroughly until desired color is attained.  Cool on foil and store in covered container (or a Ziploc bag like we did).

Joslyn has been enjoying playing with it and it smells so good and pepperminty!  Warning:  Apparently, dogs like the stuff too which I didn’t think about and Nala got half of it in her mouth, but I managed to get it out before she swallowed any as she seemed to be having trouble chewing the big wad she tried to steal.  I just read that due to the high amount of salt in it that it can cause a salt imbalance for animals if ingested and make them sick so beware of that.

This one will be lots of fun once Jos can actually cut out her own snowflakes.  Here’s the recipe:

Flour tortillas, oil, powdered sugar, cinnamon

Heat oven to 400 degrees.  Microwave tortillas for 15 seconds so they are pliable.  Fold in half then in half again and cut like you would a paper snowflake.  Unfold and brush both sides with a little oil.  Bake for 4-6 minutes depending on desired crispness.  They will begin to brown and puff up slightly.  While still warm, generously sprinkle powdered sugar on top.  We also did a few with cinnamon and powdered sugar and I liked those best.

Jos helped me unfold them and she sprinkled some sugar and cinnamon on.

Watching them bake while eating some fish crackers.  Yep, she also had her pj’s on all day! 🙂

Nala got to clean our plates for us and in this photo she was carefully watching Joslyn who was still working on hers to make sure she didn’t drop any crumbs! 😉

Today was another food making activity but we didn’t get to it because I had a dull, persistent headache all day. 😦  Justin actually came home early which allowed me to take a hot shower and a nap (Ahhh, heaven!) while he and Joslyn played outside in the snow.  What an awesome Dad and husband!  I don’t tell you enough sweetie, but you ROCK and I love you!!  So, tomorrow we have a fun activity and we will just tack our food making one from today on to tomorrow’s fun that is planned!  And now that the little sweet pea is asleep this Momma is gonna relax, read, and go to bed early, maybe by 8pm!
